Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief
As you know, Hurricane Katrina's devastation in New Orleans and the Gulf coast region has also resulted in countless numbers of animals needing to be rescued from flooded areas, homeless pets, and untold suffering. The groups below are a few of the many humane organizations actively helping with disaster relief. Please help as generously as you can.
Update 10-22-05:
Students at Truckee High School presented the Humane Society with items they had collected for the Katrina animal victims. Lucy and Harley were on hand to receive the donations. Thanks a bunch to the stdents and staff for helping out!
Update 10-16-05:
They're here! We brought back seven dogs (two of which went to High Sierra Animal Rescue in Portola, CA) and eight cats (five of which were a mom cat and her kittens born at the Sacramento SPCA). Although a couple of the dogs are heartworm positive, most of these guys are doing well. Happily, we had MORE foster families contact us than we could immediately use, and all these pets are in foster homes. Thank you, thank you! Click here to check out some pictures.
Update 9-16-05:
Animal victims from
Hurricane Katrina have been sent to shelters all across the country to help
alleviate the incredible overpopulation problems they are facing in shelters
in the south. The shelters that are accepting these animals are taking them
on as foster animals, posting their pictures on the Internet and hoping their
owners will find them. If their owners do turn up, arrangements are made to
send the animal home. If they don't, at some point in time which is yet to
be determined, the pets will be made available for adoption.
Semi-locally, the Marin Humane Society in Novato, CA has taken hundreds of animals
and will be sending some of them to other local organizations who can take a minimum of 50
animals. Of course, we are not in a position to take that kind of number but
we are in a position to help out in a smaller way. Sacramento SPCA is one of the shelters that is taking 50 at a time. They
desperately need help with finding places for these animals to go for
long-term foster care with the potential to adopt them out down the road.
We are taking our adoption van to Sacramento some time next week to transfer some of these animals to Truckee and other area shelters. If you would be interested in helping as a foster home, please contact us at (530) 587-5948 or via e-mail at info@hstt.org.
