If you have lost a pet ...

Please contact your local animal control agency right away. State law requires that all facilities hold stray animals for a minimum period to allow the owner to claim it. It is important to contact all animal facilities and shelters in the area where your pet was lost.

You might also contact local veterinarians.

In Truckee, unclaimed strays are make available to the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe for adoption. (Check our contacts page.)

Check for the presence of a license, rabies, or ID tag. The pet might also be tattooed or microchipped. Animal control agencies and veterinarians maintain scanners that can detect the presence of a chip.

If you can't immediately locate the pet's owner, the law requires you to contact your local animal control agency to report the pet, or bring it to your local impound facility or shelter.
