Did you know Truckee does not have a public animal shelter?
Without a facility, The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe struggles to find homes for hundreds of animals each year. They deserve better.
The Town of Truckee allows HSTT to keep pets in their 1,000 square foot kennel, which is well past its life expectancy and inadequate for the needs of our community. It has 10 dog runs and space for about 20 cats. At times, HSTT has upwards of 25-30 dogs and 60-80 cats.
Despite HSTT’s efforts to make this shelter less overwhelming, it can be noisy and terrifying for the animals. At times, dogs must be doubled up in cages, which can lead to fighting. Cats are very sensitive, and stress can make their health deteriorate rapidly. And because the facility is closed to the public, some animals live there for years as they wait for their forever homes. They deserve better.
Without a shelter, as our community grows, HSTT will not be able to continue caring for and placing every adoptable homeless animal we receive. We will not be able to continue to rescue animals from euthanasia at other kennels. We will not be able to continue to provide our community with low-cost spay and neuter services, pet assisted therapy programs and educational outreach.
